Google Authenticator not accepting codes

Unable to use the Google Authenticator app to log into your 2FA-enabled account? Well, it’s not uncommon for users to face a problem with authenticator apps. 2FA has made the internet a bit more secure than it used to be, and we cannot be grateful enough. As cyber threats continue to grow, experts feel that it’s mandatory for users to enable 2FA or multi-factor authentication to protect sensitive information. Plus, authenticator apps like Google Authenticator actually make it easier for users to log into their accounts seamlessly. All you have to do is enter your email and the code generated on the app to log in, eliminating the need for passwords. However, some sites will still require you to enter your password and then the code – thus the name ‘two-factor authentication’.

If Google Authenticator isn’t working for you, there could be many reasons behind it. It’s possible that the codes aren’t appearing for you, or the account is refusing to accept the codes from Google Authenticator. Or, it could be a bug that’s causing the app to not launch. Whatever the reason may be, we are here to help you troubleshoot!

How to fix Google Authenticator not working?

Firstly, make sure that you are using a code from the correct account. This issue may happen if you have added multiple accounts to the Authenticator app. We recommend labeling each account carefully so that you aren’t confused. Also, keep the backup codes for your accounts handy. If Google Authenticator refuses to work, you can at least use the backup codes to log into your account. Also, try the following workarounds:

1) Restart your device and launch the Authenticator app again. Check whether the issue persists.
2) Make sure you update the Google Authenticator app. For security apps, you should never keep updates pending.
3) Disable battery saver modes and check whether the issue persists. If you use a third-party battery saver app, open the app settings and remove Authenticator from the list.
4) If you use a third-party antivirus app, it is possible that the app is blocking the Authenticator app. Disable the anti-virus app and check whether the issue persists.
5) Another workaround is to sync the device time with Google Authenticator. To do so, tap the three dots on the top-right corner and navigate to Settings > Time Correction for Codes. Choose Sync now. Close and launch the app again.
