As the PC release of Stellar Blade is around the corner, it has been confirmed that the game will use Denuvo to protect their sales metrics. Only a few days before the actual PC launch, players came to know about this decision, and the response has been, as expected, not good. Why did this happen? Who is behind it? Is it Sony or Shift Up? Everything regarding the same will be discussed.

DRMs, especially Denuvo, are some of the most hated in the gaming community in today’s time, as it is a pain to always go through the same procedure to prove that you are the actual owner of the game. While most think that DRMs are in place to prevent piracy, they’re actually not. Games will be cracked one way or the other. These DRMs make it difficult for the modders to do so and thus delay the release of the cracked version. While this delays the process, it isn’t a solution. While doing this, players who buy the game legitimately are forced to authenticate at regular intervals that they own the game with added requirements like having an internet connection, even for an offline game. So, long story short, Denuvo, or other DRMs for that matter, is a huge setback for potential buyers. It’s not only you who’s disappointed. Many are.

After Stellar Blade’s listing on Steam and availability for pre-purchase, many have already started discussing the Denuvo situation on the game’s Steam Discussion forums, with like-minded people sharing their views. One Steam user stated the following:

Ah, didn’t notice the denuvo, I’ll wait, meanwhile I’ll do another play through on the PS5

They have decided to not purchase the game right away after they came to know that Denuvo is added to Stellar Blade. Similar to this player, there are/will be hundreds or thousands more that think likewise and will probably hold off their purchase in the hope that maybe Sony removes the DRM requirement some time later down the line. This will impact sales for sure, but is this actually what Sony wants? Why would they purposefully lower their revenue share? Maybe the answer is Shift Up.

Shift Up South Korean IP Situation

If you take a look at Shift Up, the game’s developers, they are a South Korea-based company, and if you didn’t already know, South Korean developers are almost always pretty protective of their IPs. Maybe they are the ones who decided that if Stellar Blade releases on PC, it must be equipped with Denuvo to safeguard it. And, since Sony doesn’t have a history of adding DRMs to their games released on PC, it seems to be the only plausible reason. For now, we can’t say for sure. However, there’s also the case of InZoi, from which, after fan backlash, the developers decided to remove Denuvo entirely. InZoi is also from a developer studio from South Korea, so maybe, and we are just speculating here, there is a chance that Stellar Blade releases on PC without Denuvo if there is an overwhelming amount of backlash from players. For now, it seems that Denuvo will be part of the game.

That’s all we know for now regarding the Denuvo situation of Stellar Blade on PC. We hope that you find this informative. For more such interesting reads, consider visiting Android Gram daily.
