The new Gone Fission update of Fallout 76 went live on June 3, 2025, and with it, the game received a bunch of new content. First, a new season, titled Gone Fission, and then the popular fishing mechanic. For a survival game like Fallout 76, fishing mechanics are something that really add to the immersion. You don’t have to scavenge for food if you just have a fishing rod. You can catch fish and then use them to cook dishes or eat them. But it’s not only the fish that are added to the game. Along with fish, Fallout 76 also received a total of 12 axolotls. These creatures are rare and you will need to go to great lengths to catch them. But how? More details on the same are shared below.
Fishes in Fallout 76 are classified into 4 categories: Common, Uncommon, Regional, and Local Legends. It’s obvious that catching common fish will be the easiest, while getting local legends will be the hardest. Anyway, apart from fish, there are axolotls in the game that have slightly different criteria to be caught. Each axolotl in the game is tied to a single month of the year. Yes, there are 12 axolotls in the game tied to 12 different months. Below, we have shared the list of all the axolotls featured in the game along with their locations and months.

Catching Axolotls
Similar to catching fish, you can catch axolotls via fishing. But unlike catching fish, your chances of actually catching an axolotl are quite low. These are extremely rare finds, which is why it’s recommended that you upgrade your tools first. Start by getting a Mark 2 Reel. It can be unlocked by completing the Fish Quest II – “Rare fish are more common in the rain”. The requirements to complete it are as follows:
- Catch Any Sawgill (x5)
- Catch Kanawha Piranha (Forest region)
- Catch Leatherback (Savage Divide Region)
Once you get the Mark 2 Reel, get some Improved bait or Superb bait. These increase your chances of catching rare finds a bit, which is why we recommend you get quite a few of them. After this, wait for the Rainy Weather. This includes Snow, Snow Aurora, and Thunderstorm. In these weathers, the chances of catching an axolotl are increased. Once everything’s in place, visit the Mire or Toxic Valley and find water bodies. Start fishing, and hope that an axolotl takes your bait. This is completely random and is based on luck, so you will have to keep trying.
Well, that’s all you need to know about all the axolotls location in Fallout 76 and how to catch them in the game. We hope that you find this guide informative. If you did, consider visiting Android Gram daily for more such guides.
