Forza Horizon 5 is the flagship Forza Experience that the developers poured their hearts and souls into. This game takes the graphical fidelity and overall experience of the Forza Horizon games to the next level. With one of the biggest libraries of cars in any car game and almost endless customization and tuning options, Playground Games (developers) really made it the most accessible and interactive sandbox racer out there. The game is also available to play on the Steam Deck which, surprisingly, is able to handle the graphics and computational power demanded by the game. However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows for the Steam Deck owners playing the game.
Unfortunately, many players are experiencing some issues while running FH5 on the Steam Deck. With the most recent updates to the game, there are notable issues with performance, and most importantly, the game seems to hang, crash, or freeze on the Deck causing a hardware lockout. The only solution thus far has been to restart the Steam Deck. However, there are some workarounds you can try if the issue persists even after a restart.
Forza Horizon 5 crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it?
Well, the reason for the game crashing on Steam Deck is not yet known. There, you can try a bunch of effective workarounds that are most likely to fix the issue for good.
1). Restart your Steam Deck
First and foremost, we recommend you restart the Deck entirely and then launch the game. If you need to do a force reboot, you can do that too. To do that, hold the power button down for 10 seconds. Once done, boot up the device and then run the game. You can also try signing out of your Xbox account and signing back in.
2). Verify Integrity of game files
It is possible that the game files have been corrupted. To verify the integrity, head over to Steam, select FH5, and go to Properties. Now, select the Local Files tab, and then tap on the Verify Integrity of Game Files button. After doing so,
3) Delete Saved Progress
Well, you can also try deleting your in-game progress, as save file corruption can also be a valid reason for this issue to occur. To do this, head over to the Settings option on your Steam Deck, and select the “Storage” option. Now, select “Manage Storage”, and then Forza Horizon 5. After this, delete the progress. Once done, launch the game and check if the crash persists.
4). Updates
Check and update both the game and the OS version of the Steam Deck (if available). Updating your device and the game itself can fix the issue for good. Once done, make sure to restart/reboot your system, and then launch the game.
5). Check Internal Storage or MicroSD card
You will have to make sure that there is enough space on your Steam Deck itself or on your MicroSD card (if the game is installed there). If not, delete some applications to make some space for the game to use.
6). Force Change Proton Version
Proton allows the Steam Deck to run native Steam games (Windows) on the Linux OS. It is also used by Linux users for a lot of games. Well, the game’s crashing on your Deck, you might want to force change the version of Proton to accommodate FH5’s issues. To do this, follow these steps:
- First, select FH5, and tap on the Options button. Here, select the Properties tab.
- Now, look for the Compatibility tab.
- Here, make sure that Proton GE, or Proton Experimental, is selected.
- Once that’s done, launch the game, and check whether the issue persists.
7). Reinstall the game
If none of these methods work for you, you really are short on options. You might want to consider reinstalling the game entirely. This will delete any corrupted files the system may have failed to detect and reset all permissions. That way, when you reinstall the game, it installs fresh files, and hopefully the crashing issue doesn’t occur.
8). Factory Rest the Steam Deck
This is a last resort. This will permanently erase all the data on your Steam Deck, so proceed with extreme caution. Here is how to do this:
- Go to System Settings by pressing the System button on your Deck.
- Here, look for the Factory Reset option.
- Select it, and confirm your choice.
- After resetting your Deck, install the game and check if the issue persists.
