One of the best JRPGs in recent years is the Octopath Traveler series. Starting with Octopath Traveler in 2018, the series has gotten two more entries so far, one being a prequel title and the other being a direct sequel. 2018’s Octopath Traveler was also the first game to introduce HD-2D graphics, opening the doors for other games in a similar style. The latest entry into the series is 2023’s Octopath Traveler 2, which, just like the first game, received similar praise for its narrative and characters. And now that the sequel is out, fans have started asking questions about the next Octopath Traveler game.
Since Octopath Traveler’s release, a few more HD-2D games have been released and announced. From Triangle Strategy and Live A Live to Star Ocean: The Second Story of R and Tactics Ogre: Reborn, there are a lot of great HD-2D games to enjoy out there. And hopefully, the next Octopath Traveler title will also be one. So, when is it releasing? And will it also be released for PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch? Well, let’s go ahead and find out!!
Octopath Traveler 3 Release Date for PS5, PS4, Switch & PC: When it will be available
Well, as of now, Square Enix has yet to make any announcements regarding the development, let alone the release date of Octopath Traveler 3. As we stated before, October Traveler 2 was just released last year on February 24, 2023, and as such, it would be quite a surprise to hear anything related to October Traveler 3 so soon.
Acquire Corp., the studio that co-developed Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 with Creative Business Unit II of Square Enix, was just recently acquired by Kadokawa Corporation, which also happens to have a majority stake in Elden Ring and Dark Souls developer – FromSoftware. This could potentially affect the development of the next Octopath Traveler title, as Acquire might just start working on other games.
At this point in time, it’s really hard to say what exactly Square Enix is doing with the Octopath Traveler series. We aren’t even sure if Acquire will be back to develop the fourth entry in the series.
If Octopath Traveler is indeed in development, then it’s likely that the game will see its launch on all major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. Thanks to the HD-2D graphics, even the ancient Switch hardware can run the Octopath Traveler games without many issues. While OT1 wasn’t released on PlayStation systems, the sequel OT2 did, and a port to Xbox platforms is also set to release this year. Judging by all this, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for OT3 to be multi-platform. The only main question that remains is whether it’s in active development or if Square has decided to work on the game some other time. If it’s the former, then we might see OT3 release sometime in 2026 or 2027, going by the release schedule between Octopath 1 & 2. But at the end of the day, this is just speculation on our part so take all this with a grain of salt.
