Developed and published by Starry Studio, Once Human is the new free-to-play game in the survival co-op genre. Now, when it comes to survival co-ops, almost all games in this genre have done well, provided they are good at what they do. Similarly, Once Human’s reception has been pretty overwhelming and good, as countless players have tried the game and got hooked on it. Stats-wise, it had a 24-hour peak of around 130K+ players, and for a new game, that’s very impressive. But this doesn’t mean that the game is free from issues. In fact, there are many problems in the game that the players are currently dealing with. One such issue is that the game crashes frequently. If you too are encountering the same crashing issue in Once Human, consider reading this guide for workarounds to fix the issue for good.
Once Human is set in a post-apocalyptic future universe, where you, along with your friends, can take on various enemies, fight different players for resources, uncover mysteries, and, best of all, build and manage your own territory. All that is impressive and fun for a free-to-play game, but the experience can deteriorate quite quickly if you encounter frequent crashes. So, here are some workarounds that can help you get rid of the problem.

As of now, no official fix for the issue has been released. As stated by a community manager, WHOLF, the issue has been brought to the attention of the developers. However, until an official fix is released, try these workarounds:
1) Restart
Begin by restarting your PC as an incompatible program running in the background might be causing the game to crash. So, try restarting and then check if the issue persists.
2) Undervolt/Reduce CPU Clock Speed
For games running on UE5, it is pretty common to crash on systems that use a high-performance Intel CPU from the 13th and 14th generations. Intel has, in fact, recognized this issue and is working on fixing it. Meanwhile, what you can do to fix the crashing issue is to undervolt your CPU and reduce its clock speed by -100mhz or -200mhz via the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for the best result. A player did the same, and the issue was somewhat fixed. So, we recommend giving this a try.
3) Delete folders in the game’s installation directory
For this workaround, you will have to head over to the game’s installation directory. You can use Steam for the same. Just right-click on the game in your Steam library, and select Manage>Browse Local Files. This will take you to the game installation folder. Now, enter the Documents folder, and delete the following folder:
- baking_ppk
- db_py3
- patch_ppk
After this, launch the game and select the server on which you are encountering the issue. Once loaded, don’t remain in the same area where the crash occurred.
4) Create a new character and avoid certain areas
As per player reports, it appears that the issue is exclusive to certain areas in the game on a server. So, if the above-mentioned workarounds don’t fix the issue, what you can do is create a new character and then steer clear of the area in which the game crashed previously.
5) Repeated tries
Another workaround is to keep trying to load into the server after every crash. Also, try launching the game in windowed borderless mode, and then enter the server. Right after this, click anywhere outside the game window and wait for the character to load. Once it does, click on the game window and teleport to a different region.
6) Change settings via the Nvidia/AMD Control Panel
It is possible that the default settings of your GPU are causing the game to crash. To make sure that’s not the case, you will need to make some changes. We have shared the settings you need to change if you have an Nvidia GPU. So, begin by opening the Nvidia Control Panel, then select Manage 3D Settings>Program Settings>Add. Here, add Once Human’s .exe file. Once added, change the settings as listed:
- Low Latency Mode: Ultra
- Power management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance
- Threaded Optimization: On
- Vertical Sync: Fast
Once done, save the changes, and then launch the game. The frequency of crashes should be reduced now.
7) Verify Game Files
Well, the crashing issue can also be the result of corrupted game files. If that’s the case, a simple file verification check might be all you need to fix the problem. To do so, begin by launching the Steam client, and then going to Library. Here, right-click on Once Human, and select Properties. In the Properties menu, go to the Installed Files tab and select the Verify Integrity of Game Files option. Once selected, the file verification check will commence. If there are indeed corrupted files, this will redownload them, and hopefully fix the crashing issue.
8) Change the DirectX version
For this workaround, you will have to access the game’s Properties menu as shared in the previous workaround. Once you have access to it, in the General tab, find the Launch Options textbox and enter the “-dx12” command. This will launch the game using DirectX 12. If this doesn’t fix the issue, try the “-dx11” command.
9) Reinstall
At last, if none of the workarounds are of any help, then the final workaround worth trying is to reinstall the game. A fresh installation might be all that’s needed to fix the issue. And, this time, consider installing the game on a different drive and then checking if the crashing issue persists.
With that said, these are all the effective workarounds for you to try and fix the crashing issue in Once Human. Until an official fix for the same is released, these workarounds are your best bet.
