Starfield is a space exploration game that gives you lots of choices. Some choices may be good, while others may be evil. But how should you know that the choices you make in the shadows don’t affect others? Being listed as a wanted criminal is a clear indication, but that doesn’t apply if you travel to another planetary system. Wait, aren’t you forgetting something? Yes, it’s your companion that you thought of as a disposal NPC all along. It turns out that even he or she can think about and react to how you progress. In this article, you will learn how to check how happy or angry your companions are by checking their affinity.
Affinity can be described as a stat. You must have seen damage stats or buffs on certain weapons in the game. But as you use it and add more weapon mods, its stats change. Something similar happens with your companion’s affinity as you progress throughout the game. So, what does it mean, and how do you check it? Let’s find out.
Starfield Companion Affinity: How to check & What does it mean
In most cases, you don’t know what your NPC friend is thinking or what kind of affinity he or she has for you. In some games, like Palia, there is a friendship system that shows how close an NPC is to the player. But there is nothing similar to that in Starfield. But there is a way, and we have shared details on it here:
Use the console command
For now, there is only one way to check the affinity of your companion, and that’s by inputting certain commands into the command console. There are three main commands you can use, and those are listed below:
- GetAV COM_Affinity
- GetAV COM_AffinityLevel
- GetAV COM_AngerLevel
We will explain what each command means in the next segment. Now, if you press the “~” key on your keyboard while Starfield is running, the console will appear. Now, enter one of the commands listed above. However, before this, click on the NPC of whom you want to know the affinity of. Once that’s done, enter the commands, and you will get all the ratings. For more details on what each command does, read the next segment of this guide.
Definition of commands
First, ignore the first 9 characters. What you have are three words: affinity, affinity level, and anger level. The first one will give you a value between 0 and 1300. A bigger number means your companion thinks highly of you, while zero means you are the reincarnation of evil.
The second one, or affinity level, will give a clear indication of what kind of affinity your companion has for you. The value will shift between 0, 1, 2, and 3. The highest number means you can marry your companion right now, while the lowest means a neutral state. 1 can be considered friendship, and 2 means he or she has some feelings for you.
The last one is pretty obvious. Anger level will describe how angry your companion is. There are three ranks: 0, 1, and 2. The highest means he or she is mad as a bull, while the lowest means he or she holds no grudge against you.
Change Affinity?
Well, if you want to change the affinity, affinity level, or anger level of your companion, you can do that too, but that comes with its own set of risks. So, make sure to be extremely cautious. Open the command console, and then click on a particular companion. Now, enter the following commands:
- SetAV COM_Affinity [Range 0–1300]
- SetAV COM_AffinityLevel [Range 0–3]
- SetAV COM_AngerLevel [Range 0–2]
