Want to pilot a spaceship through the universe? Do you want to visit planets with terrestrial life and get resources, or do you want to scavenge barren landscapes for their resources or technological marvels for their tools and store them all in one place? Welcome to your spaceship in Starfield. This is your mobile home in this RPG from Bethesda Studios. Like your home, this has space, and it can get full. The stuff you choose to crowd it with is cargo. If you want more space, you are going to have to make changes to how you store things or what you hold. Here, we are going to guide you through it.
So, you will have access to a lot of interesting items in Starfield. These items can be heavy, light, or medium-weight. Your ship can only carry a limited amount of items and weight, though. You must act smart and maximize this weight to get as much stuff on board as possible. All of this has been done on purpose by Bethesda Studios to incentivize inventory management. You will need to think about what you are carrying and how much it weighs. All of this and some clever inventory management will not only help you hoard more but also aid you in your exploration journey.
Starfield: How To Increase Ship Cargo Size?
Well, your ship has a cargo hold and a captain’s locker. Each of these has a weight cap, so you can’t pick up more stuff when the weight limit is reached. This is common sense because ships need to be able to take off and fly, which they cannot do with too much weight. Now, as you spend time playing Starfield and board more ships, you will see a difference in cargo size per ship. Some ships are naturally bigger and allow for more cargo. If that is not enough, you can also have it increased as you progress through the game.
What about Cargo Space?
Cargo space is the total weight of inventory and items your ship can carry. This changes per ship. There is only one way to increase this: you will need to visit a Ship Services Technician. You can find them in New Atlantis and most other major cities. Here, you can choose from various cargo options to add to your ships. This will increase the cargo capacity of the ship for as long as it is installed. Detailed instructions are as follows:
- Visit the Ship Services Technician and ask to ‘View and Modify Ship’.
- Now, choose the cargo module you would like to add.
- Be aware that there are two types of cargo holds: regular and shielded.
- Regular cargo holds are exclusively for the cargo while shielded makes it easier to pass through a contraband scan with your contraband being undetected.
Keep in mind, though, that this will affect the overall stats of the ship. If you install a massive cargo chamber, it will affect jump range and mobility. This is due to the corresponding mass increase. You will need to keep this in mind as you install it. If you want to maximize the stats of your ship, you will need to offset this against other installations to maximize stats.
It is also important to remember that this will cost you credits. If you want to have increased cargo space installed, you will need to pay for the upgrade, and this might be expensive. If you cannot spare the credits, we recommend offloading your items to your lounge locker, which has an infinite weight capacity and can be used for items that you don’t normally use.
Captain’s Locker?
This is a tiny additional storage chest that offers 40 kg of extra weight. We recommend using this to store some of your more treasured items in the game since the weight is not enough to really be very helpful.
