While a new Tomb Raider game might be years away, fans can enjoy the recently launched Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, starring Lara Croft. Developed by Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics, the game was released on February 14, 2024, and received quite a positive reception. However, the game’s not without its fair share of issues. From the not-so-great “modern” controls to the frustrating camera angles, there’s a lot to be improved upon. And right now, a particularly major issue happens to be the game not launching & working on Windows 7 as intended.
It’s hard to say what’s the main cause behind this issue. Anything from the game’s file to the game not having admin access can be a cause here. Regardless of what the cause here is, an issue like this needs to be fixed. So, let’s go ahead and check out all the workarounds for this.
Tomb Raider I-III (1,2,3) Remastered not launching & working on Windows 7: How to fix it?
Since there’s no official fix for this issue right now, players will have to make do with the following workarounds:
Use a modified Windows 7 fork of vkd3d-proton –
Before trying out any other methods, we highly recommend that you try this fix. Since a lot of players were able to get Tomb Raider Remastered working on Windows 7 using this particular method, start with it. Now, as suggested by this player here, you will need to thoroughly follow the steps mentioned below:
- Well, begin by making a copy of tomb123.exe. You can find the exe file in the game’s installation folder.
- Next, use either of the following links to download a modified Windows 7 fork of vkd3d-proton:
- Next, extract the recently downloaded files and move them over to the game’s root folder where tomb123.exe is located.
- After this, download CFF Explorer and then open tomb123.exe inside it.
- Now, click on Import Directory located in the left panel and then on KERNEL32.dll. After that, look for GetOverlappedResultEx in the lower panel and double-click on it. Change the name to GetOverlappedResult. You can now save the file.
- Finally, all you need to do is add -nolegal as a launch option and start the game.
- Additionally, those who are using the GOG version of the game are suggested to delete steam_api64.dll so that you can save your progress and change settings.
Clean boot Windows –
Players can also try clean-booting Windows 7 and see if that helps in dealing with this issue. In case you don’t know how to do that, just follow the instructions below:
- Press Windows + R on your keyboard and when the Run dialog box opens, type in msconfig. Hit Enter and wait for the System Configuration utility to open.
- Switch to the Services tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox. Now, press the Disable All button.
- Next, switch to the Startup tab and then press the Disable All button once again.
- End the process by clicking on OK and restarting your PC.
Verify the game files –
Besides the previous two methods, we also suggest you try to verify and repair the game files. At times, a missing or corrupted game file can be the cause of this type of issue too, and repairing files can help resolve that.
Steam
- Open Steam and click on Library.
- Find Tomb Raider I-III Remastered and right-click on it.
- Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Epic Games
- Launch Epic Games Launcher and select Library from the left panel.
- Now, click on the three dots next to the game’s name and select Manage > Verify.
GOG Galaxy
- Open the GOG Galaxy Launcher and click on Owned Games.
- Right-click on the game and select Manage Installation > Verify / Repair.
Run the game as an admin –
Another common fix for issues like this one is to simply run the game as an administrator. You can do that by right-clicking on the game’s exe and selecting Properties. Next, switch to the Compatibility tab and check the Run this program as an administrator checkbox. End the process by clicking on Apply and OK.
