Unable to get Grammarly to work for your Google Docs document? Well, Grammarly for Google Docs is presently in beta and is available on popular browsers like Google Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox. As a result, many of the issues are presently under investigation.
Grammarly’s Browser Extension is extremely prone to errors. You may often find yourself waiting for it to start up when you write on Google Docs and other editors. Other issues with error indicators and lags are also common. According to officials, a few workarounds are able to solve such issues easily. However, an application should not depend on workarounds for its functioning. Grammarly’s engineers are currently working on fixing these reported issues – we may get a permanent resolution soon. However, let’s talk about the workarounds we can use till then.
Grammarly not working on Google Docs: Workarounds
We have listed down all issues users face while trying to use Grammarly on Google Docs and corresponding official workarounds to fix them. Hope this addresses your problem:
1) If you don’t see the Grammarly icon while using Google Docs: Try re-enabling Grammarly. Make sure that you are on the Google Docs page when you try this workaround. To do this, open the Extensions settings on your browser. Now, click on the Grammarly icon from the list of Extensions to open options. Switch off the option that says Check for writing suggestions on Google Docs and then switch it on. The Grammarly icon should appear on the lower-right side of the document.
If you are still facing issues, clear your browser cache. On Chrome, click on the three dots (top-right) and navigate to More Tools > Clear browsing data. Here, you will find the option to delete cached data and images. If you are using a different browser, look for the option to clear browser data in your browser settings.

2) If you don’t see Grammarly underlines (error indicators) while using Google Docs: This is a known issue and the officials are working to fix this as soon as possible. As it happens, Grammarly is unable to work properly when the Google Docs document contains footnotes or tables. To fix this, remove the footnotes and tables from your document and complete checking your document with Grammarly. You can add them back after you are done using Grammarly.
3) If you face lags while editing your Google Docs document with Grammarly: This is another known issue. If you are editing a Google Docs document of 30 pages or above, you may experience lags or performance issues. Currently, there are no workarounds available for this issue. Officials are working to fix this as soon as possible.
4) If you come across a message saying “Update required”: Remove and uninstall the Grammarly extension from the Extension Settings on your browser. Now, visit your browser’s app store and download Grammarly’s latest version.
Additional Notes
1) Grammarly’s Plagiarism Checker feature is not available for Google Docs. As a workaround, you can try using the Grammarly Editor app.
2) Grammarly will not work for Google Drive services except Google Docs. Grammarly is still in beta, as far as Google Docs is concerned. So, you will not be able to use it for Google Sheets, Slides, or any other Google Drive services as of now.
