We finally got to see the official release of Ark: Survival Ascended (ASA) after many delays and breaks in development. While some fans of the series are very upset that they will essentially have to buy the same game again, ASA does have some helpful changes. There are baby dinos roaming around that you can tame, and the overall visual experience has improved quite a bit. While this is true, level progression and crafting requirements are left largely unchanged. This makes it cohesive and consistent with the original Ark Survival Evolved, and the methods will largely transfer over unchanged. This is true for crossbows as well. However, if you are wondering how to get a crossbow in Ark Survival Ascended, here’s everything you need to know.
This makes a lot of sense because making significant changes before the release of Ark 2 to ASA will only confuse the players. The consistency between ASE and ASA makes it easier for a lot of players to transition from ASE to ASA and continue playing. Many such changes are also consistent to keep the multiplayer experience constant. Players who used to be savants at PvP or PvE gameplay will find the gameplay and the experience of the servers largely the same. This essentially serves as a graphical advancement and is a stepping stone to Ark 2. Anyway, coming back to the topic, we have shared all the necessary information regarding crossbows in ASA in the next section.
Ark: Survival Ascended: How To Get a Crossbow?
Crossbows are weapons in Ark that can be used to tame and fight dinos and other creatures. They, like all crossbows, fire arrows that deal a good amount of damage. Crossbows are primarily an early-game weapon and an underwater taming weapon. They serve little purpose beyond this. Crossbows are basically useless once you can craft a longneck rifle, but they serve as good backups if you run out of ammo or gunpowder to make bullets. So, how to get them?
How to get a crossbow?
You can simply craft a crossbow as soon as you unlock the blueprint at level 25. By this time, you will already have a smithy and a refining forge (you are going to need them). You don’t need any other crafting stations to make this item. The resources you need are:
- x35 Fiber
- x10 Wood
- x7 Metal Ingots
You can make all of this with a stone hatchet and a refining forge. You will need a smithy to make the crossbow itself.
How can you get the resources?
To craft metal ingots, you will need metal. Metal can be found in golden-colored rocks around the map. You can hit these rocks with a pickaxe for more metal or a hatchet for a little metal and a lot of stone. Once you have 14 pieces of metal, you can start finding other resources. This is because the refining forge takes 2x pieces of metal to make 1x metal ingot. After crafting x7 metal ingots, you will need Wood and Fiber. Wood is easily found anywhere with trees and bushes in the game. All you need to do is hit the trees with a stone axe, and you will receive plenty of wood. For fibers, you will need to visit areas that have foliage. If you interact with the foliage with bare hands, you will get fiber.
What can you use a crossbow for?
You can use it for a lot of things. It is actually a very useful tool (note, not a very useful weapon) throughout the game. In the early game, you can load it up with tranq arrows and knock creatures out to tame them. Be careful though, since this deals more damage than torpor over time. This can kill some wounded creatures if you don’t count your shots and let the maximum time pass between shots to deal the most torpor.
In your in-game journey, you can also use crossbows for underwater taming since longnecks and other rifles don’t work there. You can also load it with a zip-line anchor and use it to get to higher places. Additionally, you also use flame arrows on it to deal status-effect damage through the fire. These features are all absent in rifles.
In the late game, you can loot a high-rarity crossbow (Ascendant or Mastercraft) to deal very high damage with your flame arrows and get an increased range on ziplines. All of this utility makes the crossbow very useful as a tool throughout the game.
