Carrying heavy items is always the work of strong muscles. But thanks to games, weight is never a restricting trait. Also, the funny part is that this doesn’t reflect on the character. For someone carrying a full inventory, surely that character will walk slowly or get out of breath quite often. Most developers avoid adding these kinds of systems to their games because they make the game sloppy, and most players do not want to experience reality in games. Instead, we gamers like to escape reality, even for a few hours. But in Baldur’s Gate 3, this system is the opposite. Your character can get encumbered pretty hard when carrying heavy loot, and the worst part is that there is a bug that can make it permanent in BG3.
What does encumber mean? This is a debuff in Baldur’s Gate 3 that only applies if your character’s inventory reaches its maximum weight limit. But many players reported that they are getting encumbered permanently, even if their weight limit is nowhere near full. So how can you fix it? There are a few ways, and we will explain them further in this guide.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Encumbrance Bug: Is there any fix yet
This bug grounds your character for an indefinite time. Although there is no official solution to this bug, a few effective workarounds exist that can help fix it. Here are some workarounds for fixing this bug:
Kill the Character
One workaround to fixing this bug in BG3 is to kill the character who is permanently encumbered. Playing with such a permanent debuff is impossible, so why not just end their misery? Well, after you kill the encumbered character, their debuff should wear off, which we think is the most promising solution. Just remember to not revive the character until their debuff wears off entirely. The debuff icon will disappear once it wears off, and you should revive your character only after that happens. Reviving will cost 200 gold.
Reach real weight limit
If your character is nowhere near the weight limit but still encumbered, then what you can do is load up their inventory with every item you have. After the real limit has been reached, the glitch may get overwritten by the real value and disappear once you strip your character naked. If done correctly, the glitched icon will vanish and be replaced by the original one. Now you can remove all the wasteful junk and enjoy your adventure.
Killing your player is good and all. But remember to do it either in the Camp or somewhere safe. Who knows? Random enemies might start showing up. It’s even worse if this glitch occurs in the middle of a team fight. So we will recommend you retreat to a safe place ASAP and attempt the first workaround. The second workaround may also work, but for that, you will need to have enough items to reach the weight limit.
Anyway, you should take your chance and use a Scroll of Revivify after killing the character. If you have already used this resurrecting item, then you must pay 200 gold coins for each revive. Unfortunately, for now, there is no cheaper option for reviving. That said, we hope now you know how to fix the Encumbrance bug in Baldur’s Gate 3.
