To rival the Apple AirTag, Samsung’s SmartTag 2 is here and provides the same basic features along with some extras. The device comes with an IP 67 rating, has a very compact design, and offers up to 500 days of battery life. But that’s not all. It also features Compass View and Search Nearby, which allow seamless navigation. That said, the primary function of this device is to keep track of your belongings which are attached to it by sharing its location, but what happens if this feature stops working suddenly? The SmartTag 2’s primary feature is to update its location so that you can find your precious items that are attached to it. So, if this feature fails to work, things can get pretty frustrating. That said, if your Samsung SmartTag 2 is not updating its location, consider reading this guide for workarounds to fix the issue.
Now, before you get into the workarounds to fix the issue, let’s get into the details of how the SmartTag 2 works. For starters, you should know that it is not meant to provide you with constant location updates out of nowhere. The tag’s functionality is for a situation when you want to locate a lost item that’s attached to it. But there’s a caveat to this as well. The tag must be within range of a Samsung device so that it can get the location and then display the same on the app. Without this, the tag won’t work. Also, keep in mind that the location of the tag won’t be updated regularly if it is already near the connected device. Now, coming to the topic at hand, here are the workarounds for the same.

Check Battery
Well, Samsung has claimed that the enhanced battery life of the SmartTag 2 allows the device to be functional for up to 500 days. While this may be true, it is always better to check the battery to verify whether it has juice left. To check the battery percentage, follow these steps:
- First, start by opening the SmartThings application on your Samsung device, that’s connected to the SmartTag 2.
- Now, in the main menu, tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines option).
- Next, select All devices
- After this, tap the icon that shows the SmartTag 2.
- Scroll down to find the Battery section. Here, you will get details about the battery percentage of the tag. If it is low or 0, then it’s obvious that the device has stopped working.
Enable Offline Finding in the SmartThings application
If the Offline Finding option for your SmartTag 2 in the SmartThings application is turned off, then once the device is out of your smartphone’s range, it won’t update its location. Now, with the Offline Finding setting turned on, the SmartTag can connect to other nearby Samsung devices that have given permission to be used as nodes in the Galaxy Find Network to update its location and send the details on the application. So, now you know why this setting is important. On your phone, go to “Settings”, then “Security & Privacy”, then “Find My Mobile”. Here, select the “Allow this phone to be found” option and then make sure that the “Offline Finding” setting is turned on. Also, in the Connections option in the Settings menu, the “Ultra-Wideband (UWB)” option should be turned on.
Manually search for the SmartTag
- Start by opening the SmartThings app on your connected device and selecting SmartThings Find.
- Here, select the hamburger icon and then tap All devices.
- After this, tap on the SmartTag you want to locate.
- Next, select Go to map. If your SmartTag can be detected, the approximate location will be shown. If not, you will have to be within the 120-meter range of the device to receive its signal and then locate it.
Remove and Add SmartTag
If the issue persists, you can try removing the SmartTag from your SmartThings application and then add it again. Doing so is quite easy too. Here’s how:
- Open the SmartThings app, then tap the Devices tab.
- Here, select the Home option. Now, tap and hold your tag, and then tap Edit.
- Next, select the Delete device option, and then tap Delete to confirm.
- Once done, you can add the SmartTag again and then check whether the location gets updated as usual.
Try resetting the device
You can try a device reset to fix this issue. If the problem is caused by a temporary glitch, a reset should be able to fix it. Here’s how you can reset your SmartTag 2:
- Unlike resetting an application, resetting the SmartTag 2 requires you to take action on the hardware level. So, begin by removing the back panel of the SmartTag 2. You can do so by sliding a thin object like a credit card into the notch at the bottom.
- Once the back panel is out, remove the battery, and press and hold the button on the center of the SmartTag for a while. Don’t let go yet.
- After a few seconds, keeping the button pressed, insert the battery again. Once inserted, keep the button pressed for another 5-10 seconds. After this, let go of the button and the device should be reset.
Note: If the SmartTag beeps after inserting the battery, try removing the battery again and repeating the steps.
Once the device is reset, the issue should no longer persist.
Contact Support
Lastly, if none of the workarounds have been of any help, then all there’s left to do is contact the official Samsung Support team for some additional assistance. And, if your device is under warranty and has not been subjected to physical damage, you might be eligible to get a replacement.
