Sunset Overdrive is a hyper-movement, open-world parkour shooter that has been quite popular since its release. The simple concept of this game and the various methods it lets you use to get around the city while battling monsters and mutants are quite impressive. While the game came out in the years before bugs and glitches were common, this one too suffers from a few of them. Recently, there has been a black screen issue that players are encountering when launching the game on their PCs. If you too are struggling with the same, consider reading this guide for more details.
Black-screen issues are common in games. After every new update, a few bugs or issues make their way into a game, resulting in incompatibility and conflicts. While this is common, fixing it is necessary for the developers to make their games playable. The same goes for Sunset Overdrive, as players are encountering black screen issues. Well, since the developers don’t really acknowledge such issues, you are often left with the problem and have to deal with it yourself. Luckily, there are some workarounds you can use to fix it.
Sunset Overdrive Black Screen on PC: How to fix it?
Most black-screen issues in games are due to issues with display drivers. Either the game has compatibility issues with your current GPU drives or the game has not been optimized for the latest version of GPU drivers. In such cases, you will have to try a bunch of workarounds to deal with the issue. Here are a few effective ones:
1). Restart your system
Restart your system to make sure there are no immediate software complications or applications running in the background that are stopping the game from working as intended.
2). Update graphics drivers
Make sure to update your graphics and display drivers to their latest versions. To do this, visit the AMD or Nvidia websites and download the latest drivers for your GPU model. Display drivers are usually automatically updated when you update Windows, so head over to the Windows Update section in the Settings menu to check for any Windows updates. If there’s an update pending, install it, and then launch the game.
3). Compatibility
Also, make sure to run the game on the dedicated GPU if you are on a laptop. If it is running on an iGPU, that’s the reason why you are encountering the black screen. Apart from this, you might also want to try running the game in Compatibility Mode for the best results. To do this:
- Head over to the game’s installation directory and right-click on its .exe file. Now, select the Properties option.
- After this, click on the Compatibility tab and checkmark the Run this program in compatibility mode for option. Now, select Windows 7 or 8 and click OK. Next, launch the game and check if the issue persists.
After you launch the game, press Alt+Enter to enter windowed mode. Doing so might fix this issue as well.
4). Update the game
Well, check whether you are running the latest version of the game. The latest version of Sunset Overdrive will be the most stable and bug-free version. This is why we recommend updating the game and then trying again.
5). Delete the Sunset_userprefs file
This is a slightly complex step that requires you to delete a file by accessing the game’s saves folder. To do this, follow the given steps:
- Open File Explorer and click on View and Enable Hidden Items.
- Now, go to the following path: C:\Users\Your UserNameFolder\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Sunflower_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Saves\User Id.
- Here, you will be able to find the ‘Sunset_userprefs” file. Delete it, and then launch the game.
6). Check your HDD
This issue might also be a result of corrupted files on your HDD, on which the game is installed. So, you should run a system scan to fix it.
- Open CMD and run it as admin.
- Now, input this command: chkdsk c: /f /r (here, C: is to be replaced by the disk you want to check, i.e., where the game is installed).
- Now, let the scan run and see if there are any corrections. After that, run this command: sfc /scannow.
- After the scan, launch the game and check whether the issue persists.
7). Verify Game files
Head over to Steam, go to Library, and right-click on Sunset Overdrive. Now, select Properties>Installed Files>Verify Integrity of Game Files. This will scan for corrupted game files that might be causing the issue. After the scan, launch the game to check if the issue occurs.
8). Install the game on the drive where Windows is installed
If you have installed the game on a different drive than the one where Windows is installed, reinstall it on the said drive. After reinstallation, you shouldn’t encounter this issue anymore.
