Of all the tames in Ark Survival Ascended, one of the hardest and most annoying tames is the Quetzal. Few players are able to attempt this without a tribe, and this too is a very technical process that requires a lot of patience and practice. So, what is the easiest way to tame a Quetzal in ASA, you ask? Well, this article is here to help you with just that. The changes in ASA have made a huge impact on the player base, some good, some bad. Taming quetzals, unfortunately, was made much worse.
Solo-taming a quetzal was already a hard thing to do in ASE. You often need a lot of tranq darts or narcotics to tame one. While it remains the same in ASA, like with other dinos like the Anky and the Direwolf, the changes to the game make it very difficult to tame it. It is typically a team effort that you have to have tribemates for. Despite these hurdles, it was possible to tame this dino in Ark Survival Evolved, and the method stays the same in ASA as well.
Ark Survival Ascended (ASA) Quetzal Taming Guide: How to tame & get it?
Quetzals are majestic creatures. They are Ark’s largest fliers and have very good weight and stamina stats. They are so good at flying that you can put a platform saddle on them and build your structures there. Quetzals will take off with the entire load on their backs and keep flying great distances.
How to tame it?
Quetzals are a knockout tame. You will have to knock them out and feed them when they are unconscious. There are only 2 problems with this idea though;
- They don’t spawn on the ground so you can’t trap them (realistically)
- They flee when shot, so you will have to chase them.
Unlike Pteranodons, they don’t land, and they are too big for a bola. This means you will have to tame them in the air. How is that done? That is the hard part. If you were in a team, you could carry a tribemate on a Tapejara, follow the Quetzal, and they could knock it out with tranq darts. Since you don’t have this option (single-player), you are going to have to try something new.
What do you need?
To tame a quetzal solo, you need a couple of things:
- A long-neck rifle with tranq darts or shocking tranq darts (the crossbow is too inaccurate for air shooting).
- A crossbow with a grappling hook attachment.
- Parachutes (a few of them to be safe).
- An Argentavis or a Tapejara.
After you have the required items and creatures, you essentially have to find a quetzal flying around first. Once found, get close to it with an Argentavis or a Tapejara (because both are close to the same speed as the quetzal). When it is flying away from you (post-first shot), jump off. As soon as you jump off, open your parachute and use your grappling hook to latch on to the Argentavis. If you are on a Tapejara, you can switch to the back seat and follow the same instructions. Now, whistle your flier to either attack the Quetzal or move towards it. They will move towards it even when it starts fleeing. Since you are not technically mounted on either, this won’t cost stamina either. Once you are too close or your flier is attacking, you can whistle it away so it doesn’t actually attack.
In the meantime, as the flier is flying towards the quetzal, you can keep shooting it with your tranq darts. This will raise its torpor, and eventually, the quetzal will fall to the ground, knocked out. Once knocked out, you can feed it mutton, meat, or exceptional kibble (recommended) to tame it.
