Lethal Company is a massively successful game released in October 2023 on Steam as an early access title. It is a horror game set in a world where players are expected to venture out to different abandoned industrialized moons in search of scrap to sell to the company in exchange for credits. Said moons are inhabited by hostile creatures waiting to make you their next meal, because, of course, why wouldn’t they be? The game has received massively positive feedback so far, with players really enjoying the sounds of their friends’ getting their backs broken over the in-game voice chat. Unfortunately, some players are not able to do this, as people have reported their microphone not working/being detected in Lethal Company.
The in-game voice chat is an integral part of the experience of Lethal Company. Not only is it really fun hearing your friends’ shrieks when they encounter a monster, but communication is essential to effectively scavenge for scrap to make those sweet credits. So if you are encountering the microphone not working issue in the game, we understand if you are frustrated. So keep reading this guide until the end to find out if a fix exists.
Lethal Company Microphone Not Working/Detecting Issue: Is there any fix yet?
There is no official word from the developers on this issue as of yet, but we have compiled a list of workarounds for you to try out below. Firstly, though, make sure to perform basic checks, like is the microphone plugged in properly or is it turned off?
Select the right input device in-game –
Sometimes the game auto-selects the wrong input device. For example, if you are playing on a system with an in-built microphone but are using a separate microphone that is, say, built into your headset, the game might have auto-selected the system’s in-built microphone. So make sure to select the right audio input device. Lethal Company’s in-game settings menu has an audio settings option, where you can check this.
Check if Push To Talk is enabled-
Push to Talk is the audio setting that only unmutes your mic if you are holding down a specific key. So, if this setting is enabled, your in-game voice can only be heard after you press the Push to Talk button. Therefore, try switching the Voice mode via the in-game settings menu, and set the Voice Mode to Voice Activation. If that didn’t fix the issue, enable Push to Talk, and check again.
Close background applications –
Specific applications, like Discord, that are running in the background may be causing access issues with Lethal Company using your microphone. Try closing these applications, restarting your game, and checking if the issue still persists.
Update audio drivers –
It might be a driver issue, so make sure your audio drivers are up-to-date. On Windows systems, you can open the Device Manager, go to ‘Sound, video, and game controllers’, select the primary audio device, go to ‘Driver’, and select ‘Update Driver’. If a new update is available, it should automatically download and install it.
If the issue still persists, it is possible it might be an interface issue that was encountered by jiminywinkle. So, in this case, try using a different microphone with an interface like USB B. Or it could be a case of corrupted/missing game files, in which case you could try verifying the integrity of game files via Steam. The game is still in early access, so these kinds of bugs are to be expected. For now, these are the only workarounds that might get rid of the issue for good.
