The tactical RPG, developed and published by XD, has finally been released. Sword of Convallaria is a free-to-play game that offers a Japanese turn-based & pixel art theme where players are required to save Iria, a nation that is rich in minerals. Due to the abundance of magical resources in the nation, factions have invaded the area and it is up to you and your team of mercenaries to defend the nation against enemies. Like most RPG games, the decisions you make in-game shape the overall story, and given this, the gameplay is pretty interesting. Now that the game has been released, it is obvious that players on the Steam Deck have tried it out. The game’s demo ran well on the Deck, and so did the full game. But you might have encountered crashing issues while trying to launch the game on your Deck, otherwise, you wouldn’t have been reading this guide. Well, if that’s indeed the case, don’t worry. We are here to share some effective workarounds to help you get rid of this problem for good. So, consider reading this guide until the end for more details.
The Steam Deck is no doubt a very popular handheld among the wide range of handhelds available. It won’t be far-fetched to say that the release of the Deck led to the introduction of handhelds in the mainstream gaming scene. After it debuted in February 2022, many handhelds from other manufacturers were released as well. But unlike most handhelds, the Steam Deck is a bit different. Apart from the hardware side of things, the Deck runs on a Linux-based Steam OS, whereas other handhelds are basically Windows-based PCs. Due to its reliance on Linux, some games encounter compatibility issues when played on the Deck, even leading to crashes. So, similar is the case with Sword of Convallaria. But don’t worry. This isn’t a problem that can’t be fixed. There are tried and tested workarounds for the same.

Sword of Convallaria crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
Since Sword of Convallaria is neither listed as Playable nor Verified for the Steam Deck, such issues won’t be receiving official fixes anytime soon. So, try these workarounds:
1) Restart the Deck
Well, a very common fix for issues related to crashing in games requires you to restart the device. So, consider doing so before trying out any other workarounds. Begin by force restarting the Steam Deck, and then launching the game to check if the crashing persists. Sometimes, conflicting applications can also cause this issue, which a restart should be able to fix. If the issue persists, try the next fix.
2) Proton Version
This workaround is the most obvious and effective one. Since the game neither has official Steam Deck nor Linux support, you will need Proton to run it on the Linux-based SteamOS. And, it is possible that the Proton version you are using is causing the game to crash during launch. So what you can do is change the proton version and then check if the issue persists. Don’t know how to change the Proton Version? We’ve got you covered. Begin by heading over to Steam, and then to your Library. Here, go to the game’s tile, and press the Options button. In the new context menu, select Properties. Now, go to the Compatibility tab, and then select checkmark the Force Proton Use option. Select the drop-down option and choose a Proton version. You can start with Proton Experimental and then switch to GE if that doesn’t work.
3) Select SteamOS Beta Channel
It is also possible that the SteamOS in use is causing the crashes. To rule out this possibility, you can switch to the Beta channel of SteamOS and then launch the game to check if the issue persists. Doing so is pretty easy too. All you have to do is access the Settings menu of your Steam Deck. In the Settings menu, find the Beta Participation option. Now, select it, and then choose the Beta option from the drop-down menu. Next, save the changes. After this, restart the Steam Deck, and then launch the game. If the issue was indeed caused by the current version of SteamOS in use, this should fix it.
4) Update SteamOS
If you haven’t updated the SteamOS of your Deck for a long time, now is the time to do so. Updating the SteamOS might be all you need to get rid of the crashing issue.
5) Verify Integrity of Game Files
While trying out workarounds to fix crashing issues in a game, you cannot rule out any possibility. Corrupted files can also cause crashing issues in games, which is why we recommend that you verify the integrity of game files too. For this, go to Steam>Library>Sword of Convallaria. Now, press the Options button and select Properties. After this, go to the Installed Files tab and select the Verify Integrity of Game Files option. Wait for the scan to be completed, and then launch the game. If the issue was indeed the result of corrupted files, this should fix it.
6) Invalid Platform fix
If you are encountering the Invalid Platform error while launching the game, then the fix is easy. To fix it, access the Settings menu in Steam, and go to Compatibility. Here, the option “Enable Steam Play for all other titles” must be checkmarked. Once done, the issue should be fixed.
7) Reinstall
If none of the above-mentioned workarounds fixed the crashing issue, then all there’s left to do is reinstall. A fresh installation might be all that’s required to fix the problem. So, begin by uninstalling the game and then installing it. After this, launch it to check if the same crashing persists. If it does, then you can try dual-booting your Deck with Windows.
That said, now you know all the workarounds worth trying to fix the crashing issue of Sword of Convallaria on the Steam Deck. If you find this guide informative, consider visiting Android Gram for more such interesting content on all things gaming.
