Captivating visuals are often considered the standard for comparison between two games. If two games with the same concept and similar types of gameplay are compared, players will definitely go with the one that has more dynamic visuals. The gameplay is enhanced when the players can perceive every little detail in the game. This can be enhanced further with the HDR setting in your PS5. Considering you are reading this article, you might already know what I’m talking about. Enabling HDR on your PS5 increases the depth and contrast in a game. The high-definition video makes the game more immersive and enjoyable overall. However, sometimes when playing a game on PS5, players can observe washed-out colors after enabling HDR.
This can happen due to a few reasons. Either the HDMI cable you are using is damaged, or the game does not support HDR. Also, your display should support HDR output from your PS5. These are some of the crucial things that need close attention. To make this easy for you, here are some troubleshooting steps that tackle the different problems that can cause the colors to be washed out on your PS5.
Fixes for HDR washed out colors on PS5:
1) Hard reset devices:
A hard reset on your display and your PS5 is recommended. Turn off your PS5 and unplug the power cable. For the display, you can directly pull out the power cable without turning it off. If you prefer to turn it off, that’s up to you. Keep the power cable unplugged on both devices for 1 or 2 minutes. Then plug the power cable back and turn both the devices on. Check if the HDR display setting is still causing washed-out colors on your PS5.
2) Check HDMI cables:
The next thing you want to check is the HDMI cables. The HDMI cables being damaged is an obvious reason for problems with the display. Check the cables for visible damage or loose ends. Also, check if the pins are damaged on either side of the cable. If you find problems in the cables, replace them with better ones and check if the washed-out colors on your PS5 id fixed.
3) Tweak HDR settings:
Go to the PS5 home screen and open the settings by selecting the cog icon at the top right corner of the screen. Open the screen and video settings and select HDR. Change the setting to ‘On when supported’. This will turn on HDR only when it is supported in a game.
Now go to ‘Deep color output’ and set it to Automatic. Also, set the RGB range to Automatic. Make sure that enable 120HZ output is turned on and exit the settings. With the following changes in the video settings of your PS5, using HDR should not result in ‘washed out colors’ on your display.
To ensure the success of this step, select Adjust HDR. This will close your game to implement the changes to the settings. Now, follow the on-screen prompts to adjust the display. While at it, go to the Accessibility settings and select color correction. Turn on ‘Enable color filter’ for higher contrast and saturated colors on the screen.
4) Change the graphics settings in-game:
Whichever game you play, make sure that HDR is enabled in its graphics settings. Change the brightness levels to suit your preference and see if it makes a difference.
