Before proceeding with the fixes for this issue, make sure that your system is connected to the internet. Also, it is important that you have administrator access to the device. If your account is not registered as the administrator for the device, ask the administrator to install the update. If you have already taken care of these parameters, move on to the solutions.

1) Drive Space:

If you are trying to upgrade your device to Windows 11 OS, make sure that you have enough storage space left. The upgrade will need you to have 16GB of free space on a 32-bit system and 20GB for a 64-bit system. You might need to free up space if your device is running low on available space. Free up some space and try to install the update again. Hopefully, you won’t face the Windows 11 Second boot error hereafter.

2) Restart and check for updates again:

This step is pretty simple and straightforward. Some updates require users to restart the system for the update to finish installing. So, restart your computer. Now, go to Settings and click on Windows Update. Sometimes, there can be more than one update queued up. Hence, click ‘Check for updates’ to look for other pending updates.

3) Remove external hardware:

External hardware that is not essential for your system to function is to be removed temporarily. Remove hardware like speakers, headphones, mic, printers, etc. Restart your device and check if the Windows 11 Second boot error still bothers you. If it does, follow the next step.

4) Update Drivers:

Go to Device Manager app by searching for the same in the Windows search box and opening it. Right-click on drivers you recognize (especially, video drivers and display adapters) and choose Update driver. You can also choose to uninstall the drivers and perform a PC restart to automatically trigger reinstallation. When you have updated all the drivers, restart your computer and try to install or upgrade to Windows 11 now.

Also, while you are there, check for yellow exclamation marks which sometimes indicate hazardous drivers or files. You will be asked to update the software by the system. But if updating doesn’t fix it, just remove/delete the driver. Restart your computer and check if the hazard icon is gone. If you still face the Second boot error, perform the next step.

5) Deactivate third-party firewall:

If you have third-party anti-virus software installed on your system, deactivate it temporarily. The firewall can prevent crucial steps when installing the OS on your system. Hence, deactivate such software temporarily and then try to install the update. The Windows 11 Second boot error should now be solved.

6) Repair using commands:

Open the Command prompt as an administrator. Just type in ‘CMD’ in the Windows search box and right-click the first result to select ‘Run as an administrator’. Then type in the below-mentioned commands one by one. After typing in every command, press enter. You might also have to wait sometime before entering the next command:

Hard drive scan – chkdsk/f C:
SFC scan – sfc /scannow
DISM scan – DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
When you are done running all three scans, restart your computer and check the results. The Windows 11 Second boot error should be resolved.
